President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has ordered the Minister for Education Jessica Alupo to find a 20% salary increment for teachers in the next two weeks.
The Minister for Education Jessica Alupo was tasked to form an inter-ministerial committee to analyse the budget and find a 20% salary increment for the teachers after a meeting this week with the Uganda National Teachers Union
The declaration comes as a surprise as less than a week ago, President Museveni insisted that he would not grant teachers the full 20% promised salary increment.
Despite president Museveni’s advice to the teachers to go and study the budget and find where the 20% pay increase can be got, the teacher’s union has advised all its members not to teach on Monday if they fail to get transport to their respective schools.
If by Monday the status quo stands, the teacher’s body will announce its next move as it still waits for its 90 day ultimatum to elapse, in which it wants government to rise the teacher’s pay by 20% while Government is instead proposing a 4% increase.
This comes as the government’s promise to have teachers and civil servants paid by the end of this week fails, with no single explanation from the Ministry of finance.
